dâm-funk (pronounced: ‘Dame’ as in Damon G. Riddick) is known as Los Angeles’ “Ambassador of Boogie-Funk” and represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere, his legendary Monday-night session in Culver City which is rooted in the early-’80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.
As a DJ, dâm-funk attracts the most discerning Boogie-Funk afficionados, but it’s not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records, Salsoul Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups’ unknown contemporaries – more obscure, but equally Funk-worthy.
The next phase of the mission: continuing the classic West-Coast tradition into today’s scene with his own original “Modern-Funk” compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, dâm-funk channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie as he glides into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe in a promising new chapter for Southern Cali space funk. Look out for his debut LP Toeachizown on Stones Throw in 2009.
dâm-funk has got to be one of the coolest cats out there. His vibes on the 1s and 2s serve up one nasty hook after another. His record crates exposed me to a niche within the Funk genre that I had never explored, as I tend to gravitate more towards the ’60s and early-’70s stylings. His signing to Stones Throw makes me excited that his mixes and original compositions will get the recognition they deserve. Lastly, his smooth temperament and composed delivery show he’s just a genuine fella exposing his love of music to the rest of us. Much respect!
Yo dâm! When you gonna hit up Thailand? Yeah it’s far, but the laid-back atmosphere of these areas makes it perfect to crank up the boogie-funk on the hi-fi and just ride…
