Duke Lumumba – Jungle Funk

June 24, 2011

Recorded during the same intercontinental odyssey that yielded Fela Kuti’s The ’69 Los Angeles Sessions, Ghanian trumpeter Duke Lumumba’s Jungle Funk is a groundbreaking and often brilliant marriage of Soul-Jazz textures and African rhythms. The music’s rich, dynamic melodies and supple, syncopated beats are both infectious and startlingly original. Although the song structures are rooted in conventional jazz idioms, Lumumba sings several songs in his native tongue in addition to employing traditional African percussion instruments. The result is a seamless and organic blend of musical cultures.
