Funky Funky Houston – The Vaults Of Ovide Records 1967-72
May 13, 2008
In the late 1960′s, Ovide Records was Houston, Texas’ home of deep soul grooves & uncut funk and was owned and operated by KCOH-AM disc jockey Skipper Lee Frazier. In his spare time, Frazier managed Archie Bell, whose single “Tighten Up” went #1 nationally on Atlantic Records, but it was issued on Ovide first. The T.S.U. Toronados, the house band, were to Ovide and Houston what Booker T & the M.G.’s were to Stax and Memphis. They were also the band who played on “Tighten Up”, but were never credited. This record chronicles Ovide’s best and rarest soul gems and definitely does not fail when it come to hot and sultry grooves. Scorchin’!
