Katharine Whalen’s Jazz Squad

It was the days of going to Squirrel Nut Zippers shows in the mid- to late-’90s and early 2000s that I first fell in love with Katharine Whalen’s voice. Hearing her stunning vocals coupled with the outstanding musicianship of the group was a treat if there ever was one, and the fact that they passed through Atlanta frequently made it all the better.

Around 1999, Katharine and friends joined together to create an album giving a fresh take on old Swing and traditional Jazz numbers. Stellar sounds from start to finish!

While I did pick up Dirty Little Secret a few years back, I have to admit that, until right now, I was unaware that she had/has (?) two groups; one called Katharine Whalen’s Parlour Folk Troupe and the other called Katharine Whalen and Her Fascinators. Would love to hear the records they’ve put out, so I guess I gotta get diggin’.

For now, enjoy the sounds of her Jazz Squad who deliver a remarkable set of tunes!
