Will Holland aka Quantic (playing accordion for this entire record) delivers a set of instrumental Cumbia tracks direct from Sonido del Valle, his home studio in Cali, Colombia. The tracks were laid down by his studio band, Los Miticos Del Ritmo (The Mythics of Rhythm), and recorded direct to 4-track tape to maintain the feel of 60s era recordings from the region. The tracklisting sees a mix of original compositions coupled with a selection of covers, one of which is absolute pure gold.
Thrilled to finally get my hands on the “No Pares Hasta Tener Lo Suficiente (Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough)” cut that I’ve been obsessed over since hearing Quantic’s DJ set with Nickodemus at the Days Like This festival in Sydney back in 2010. Been searching high and low for two years thinking it was a tune that had already been released by another artist from the 80s. Should have known better that it was an exclusive. Killer sounds!
Pick out your best sombrero, lace up your dancin’ shoes, pour a shot of aguardiente and get ready to turn up the volume on the hi-fi and cut a rug to the festive sounds of Los Miticos Del Ritmo!
In case you missed it, here’s the highly-limited EP full of unreleased and exclusive cuts from the brilliant mind of Quantic. In this set, he pays tribute inna Cumbia-style to some Hip Hop classics. The idea for this musical project started when Quantic recorded “Rico Suave Bossa Nova (Cumbia de Dilla)” as a special one-off track, to play at DJ parties, particularly those in L.A. where Hip Hop and Cumbia have a special place in people’s hearts. The queue of eager fans crowding round to ask about the track inspired and set this new project on the road. This EP features the Dilla track and covers of KRS One, Dr. Dre, Missy Elliot, Outkast, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and an original track, “Cuarta Con Cuarta”.
